Professional Development
Professional development is facing a new wvave of accountability pressures. Rather than “enrichment,” PD is now central to a huge effort to improve teachers’ content knowledge. In the technology arena, districts are stil struggling to figure out how to move beyond simply teaching the technical skills teachers need to use computers, and instead help them figure out how technology can improve their instruction and deepen students’ learning. Educators play a vital role in encouraging, enriching, supporting and sustaining student learning. But, with new technologies and stricter standards exerting greater demands on them, educators now need an equal amount of support to develop further their teaching skills, broaden their subject knowledge and expand their use of new technologies to meet these challenges. That’s where professional development comes in. Through workshops, technology initiatives and online communities, professional development affords educators new opportunities to strengthen their teaching.
