Next Generation Preschool Science
2013 to 2017

This research and development project, funded by an NSF DRK-12 grant, will develop, iteratively refine, and evaluate an innovative program for disadvantaged preschoolers to promote their learning of key science practices and concepts. Next Generation Preschool Science will (1) integrate common and established classroom learning experiences, such as reading books and participating in hands-on investigations, with new, developmentally appropriate digital activities that provide interactive classroom learning opportunities with unique affordances for science learning, and (2) include strong professional development resources to support teachers and guide classroom implementation. The program will facilitate young children’s engagement in science practices, such as questioning, planning, and carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, and constructing explanations, and will promote understanding of big ideas in the life, physical, and earth science domains—all building blocks for successful science learning in later years.
